Rental terms

Plain English, and short on purpose. If something here is unclear, email us before you book and we will answer it straight.

Who you are renting from

J Blades t/a Piano Recycling. Contact us at hello@pianorental.uk. All prices on this site include VAT.

What you are renting

One second hand beginner upright acoustic piano from our stock. We choose which one. It will be a full size 88 key upright with three pedals, checked over and in tune when it leaves us. It is used, and it will look used in places.

The piano stays ours throughout. You are renting it, not buying it, and no part of what you pay goes towards owning it. You cannot sell it, pledge it, lend it out or move it to another address without asking us first.

What you pay

A one-off delivery charge, plus rental at the weekly rate billed every four weeks in advance by card. The delivery charge covers delivery to you, the tuning visit after delivery, and collection at the end. We do not bill you again for collection.

Stairs are charged per floor, and that charge covers carrying the piano up at the start and back down at the end. There is no deposit.

Because billing is every four weeks rather than monthly, there are thirteen payments in a year, not twelve.

Tuning

We pay for a tuning visit in your home about ten days after delivery, once the piano has settled into your heating, and one tuning visit every year after that. Any tuning you want beyond those is yours to pay for, and we are happy to arrange it at the rate shown on our site.

A piano that has just been moved will shift in pitch. That is normal and it is why the first tuning happens after delivery rather than before.

Minimum term and ending the rental

There is no minimum term. To end the rental, give us four weeks notice. The rental then ends at the first four-weekly billing date that is at least four weeks away, and we collect the piano on or around that date. You keep paying up to that date and not beyond it.

In practice this means the least anyone pays is the delivery charge plus about eight weeks of rental, because you have already paid for the four week period you are in when you give notice.

We will agree a collection day with you and confirm the time slot the day before, the same as we do for delivery.

Your right to cancel

Because you are booking online, you have fourteen days from booking to change your mind. If you cancel before we deliver, you get everything back. If you ask us to deliver inside those fourteen days and then cancel, we may keep a reasonable amount for the work already done, which in practice means the delivery we have already made and the trip to collect it again.

Access, and what we will and will not do

We deliver to a ground floor room of your choice as standard. First floor is charged per floor and books online. Second floor we will only do after we have seen photographs of the stairwell and agreed it is safe. We do not take pianos above a second floor without a lift that genuinely fits one, because we would have to bring it back down at the end.

You need to tell us about anything that affects access: narrow hallways, tight turns, gravel, steps up to the front door, parking restrictions. If we arrive and cannot get the piano in because of something you could have told us, we may have to charge for the wasted visit.

A lift only removes the stair charge if it actually takes an upright piano, which is about 1.5 metres wide. Most domestic lifts do not.

Looking after it

Keep it indoors, in a normally heated and ventilated room, away from radiators, direct sun and damp. Normal wear from ordinary playing is ours to deal with. Damage beyond that is yours, including damage from moving it, spills, pets, or leaving it somewhere it should not be.

We recommend telling your home contents insurer that there is a rented piano in the house. Most will cover it and it costs nothing to mention.

If the piano develops a fault that is not your doing, tell us and we will repair it or swap it.

If a payment fails

We will try again and let you know. If it stays unpaid we will contact you to sort it out, and if we cannot, we may end the rental and collect the piano. We would much rather hear from you than chase you.

Where we deliver

England, Scotland and Wales. Every postcode area has a fixed day we are in it, and that day is your delivery and collection day. That fixed routing is why the rental is priced as low as it is. For Northern Ireland, the islands or anywhere unusual, email us first.

Buying it

There is no purchase option built into this agreement and nothing you pay in rent is credited towards buying the piano. If you decide you would like to own it, talk to us and we will discuss a price at the time. Any sale would be a separate agreement.
